Sometimes you don’t know what you’re made of, and you don’t see how complete God designed you. Other times there are people who call out things about you to make you think you’re unable, incapable, or unqualified for the very things God designed you to do.
A perfect picture of this is in the film The Sound of Music. Remember the scene where all the other nuns are complaining about Maria? She’s late. She daydreams. She runs off to the hills and mountains and gets lost in nature. She sings in the garden without permission, and even in the abbey when it is not time to sing. But singing and dreaming and passionately filling the day with every possible adventure are what make Maria wonderful. They are what attract the Captain to her, and enable her to reunite the relationships in his family—and endure all the cruel days of flight across the Alps from the Nazis. The very things her fellow nuns had complained about in song at the beginning of the film are the things they sing about to Maria’s glory on her wedding day. They are the very things that enable Maria to help her new family reach their destiny.
I’ve gone through seasons when I was convinced that I wasn’t equipped to do anything for God. I thought I didn’t possess this feature or that one that was necessary. So many people in the Bible were like this too. Moses didn’t think he could speak eloquently. Zaccheus thought he was too short to be seen by Jesus, let alone entertain him one day.
But God does not make mistakes. He has done a wonderful work in each of us. He makes everything perfect for its time and sometimes the issue is not what we lack, but that we don’t feel qualified or confident. God says to you: You are qualified because I equipped you. You are not alone because I have given you my Holy Spirit to live and dwell in you.
